St. Louis Developer Of Kansas State Bio-Defense Lab Opens KC Office

Contrary to earlier reports, St. Louis-based McCarthy Building Cos. says more than 90 percent of the construction on a $1.14 billion national bio-defense laboratory project at Kansas State University will be done by regional contractors and workers.

If Congress approves the $714 million President Barack Obama has budgeted for the lab, construction would begin next year and “have a significant impact on the regional economy for a five-year period,” McCarthy’s Scott Witkop said.

McCarthy is also opening an office next month in Leawood, Kan. that’s expected to start with four full-time staffers and grow in the future.
