Cold Winter Helps Drive Great Plains Energy First-Quarter Gains

Great Plains Energy, the parent company of Kansas City Power & Light, reported a first-quarter profit of $26.5 million, driven by higher electric rates, a cold winter and a decline in interest expenses. The company posted a first-quarter loss of $9.5 million last year

Great Plains’ electric utility business, which includes KCP&L, generated net income of $27.6 million for the first quarter, up from $4.5 million in the same period last year.
