City Approves Wal-Mart Store After Lengthy Debate

More than 100 people attended a standing-room-only debate in city hall over whether Raytown should relax zoning in its central business district to accommodate the Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market. Speakers and aldermen opposed the store for a variety of reasons, including the building’s size and the possible detrimental effect of Wal-Mart on other businesses. After seven and a half hours, at 3 a.m., the alderman voted 6-4 to essentially approve the store construction.
