Protestors gathered at Kansas City’s Country Club Plaza on Saturday for a “March Against Monsanto,” one of numerous demonstrations across the country and world to protest the Creve Couer-based seed giant’s practices. The company has come under fire for its use of genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, in food.
A push to allow states to require labels on foods with GMOs was defeated last week in the U.S. Senate, but debate over Monsanto’s methods continues away from Capitol Hill. Opponents of GMO foods question their safety and environmental effects. Advocates say they can be hardier crops that allow for harvests with the use of fewer chemicals and less fuel.
