Bankruptcy Judge Lets Patriot Coal Change Union Pact

A U.S. Bankruptcy Judge in St. Louis granted Patriot Coal’s motion to modify agreements with the miners union on wages, benefits and pensions, and change health care benefits for certain union retirees. The United Mine Workers Union, which organized protests against Patriot’s plan to reject collective bargaining agreements, said the ruling will affect more than 23,000 retired miners and their families. St. Louis-based Patriot filed for bankruptcy in July.
