Dish Tops Sprint’s Bid for Clearwire Ahead Of Vote

Dish Network raised its bid for Clearwire to $6.9 billion in an attempt to outbid Sprint Nextel two days before Clearwire shareholders are meeting to vote on a deal. Englewood, Colo.-based Dish increased its offer from from $3.30 to $4.40 in cash per share, now 29 percent higher than Overland Park, Kan.-based Sprint’s bid of $3.40 per share.

Dish chairman Charlie Ergen said that Bellevue, Wash.-based Clearwire’s wireless spectrum is key to Dish being able to deliver future service, and he touted the new proposal as “a meaningfully superior alternative” to Sprint’s offer.
