In Depth: Monsanto’s Seed Control Problem Poses Big Challenge

The discovery and spread of a rogue strain of Monsanto wheat prompted Japan to suspend imports of western wheat and prices of the grain subsequently fell on the Chicago Board of Trade, headed for the biggest monthly drop since February. As Monsanto faces widespread protests over genetically modified crops, scientists warn that the seed-control problem is likely to persist, given weak federal rules and the strength of natural selection.
