FCC Approves Sprint Deals With SoftBank, Clearwire

The Federal Communications Commission has approved Sprint Nextel Corp.’s transactions with SoftBank Corp. and Clearwire Corp. FCC acting chairwoman Mignon Clyburn said in a written statement the proposed SoftBank-Sprint-Clearwire transactions were in favor of the public interest and promote competition, customer choice and lower prices in the wireless marketplace.
Sprint shareholders approved Tokyo-based SoftBank’s $21.6 billion bid for 78 percent of the Overland Park, Kan.-based wireless carrier on June 25. On Monday, Clearwire shareholder will vote on Sprint’s proposed acquisition of the 49 percent of the Bellevue, Wash.-based company that it does not already own.
