Harmony, a mixed-use development expected to eventually include more than 16,000 homes and 4 million square feet of retail space on 3,000 acres in Independence, is scheduled to break ground this fall. The Community of Christ, which owns the land, picked St. Charles-based Homes by Whittaker to develop the development’s first portion, a 130-acre site set to include 500 to 750 homes and apartments, an elementary school and neighborhood commercial properties. Construction is scheduled to begin next spring or summer on the first phase of the project, which is expected to be built out over 25 years. Harmony is being designed with an emphasis on compact, walkable, mixed-use projects, like the New Town at St. Charles development, another Homes by Whitaker project.
