As two new outlets open about three miles apart in Chesterfield this month, many people in the St. Louis area wonder how a region already brimming with retail options can support the Taubman Prestige outlets and the St. Louis Premium outlets. One of the answers, mall operators say, is tourists.
The outlets are teaming with hotels and the Lambert-St. Louis International Airport to drive traffic. They’re hoping to draw shoppers within a five-hour drive, offering a special savings pass for customers who can show they live at least 50 miles away.
And some analysts who initially predicted disaster when the malls’ developers proceeded with such similar projects in close proximity are now wondering if the outlets could turn the St. Louis suburb into something of a retail mecca.
