Patients Sue Missouri Hospitals For Not Submitting Bills To Insurers

The number of hospitals bypassing health insurance and sending bills directly to patients is thought to be growing as health care providers look for new sources of revenue due to reforms that seek to curb costs.

The practice, particularly common in the case of automobile accidents, has come as a shock to most patients. But now accident victims around the country are fighting back, helped by lawyers filing lawsuits and in one state by legislators who earlier this year passed a bill to ban the practice. In the Kansas City and St. Louis areas, lawsuits have been mounted against three major hospitals.
