The Savoy Grill and Savoy Hotel, fixtures in downtown Kansas City since the 1880s, may be on the verge of a $47.5 million overhaul if the city approves tax incentives needed to help finance the project. A developer is seeking $15 million in tax-increment financing from the city and another $16 million in state and federal historic tax credits.

The developer, Louisville, Ky.-based 21c Museum Hotels, has an option to buy the hotel and restaurant and wants to restore the property as a luxury, 120-room hotel and restaurant. The company would retain the atmosphere of the 110-year old hotel, which has housed the likes of Teddy Roosevelt, Will Rogers and John D. Rockefeller, while also adding contemporary art and other amenities to make it a “cultural center.”
