Bushnell Group Holdings Inc. has closed a $985 million cash deal to be acquired by Virginia-based Alliant Techsystems Inc.

Alliant, or ATK, operates the federal government’s Lake City Army Amuunition Plant in Independence. The company believes that acquiring Bushnell will result in an expansion in shooting sports and the acquisition of more younger customers, who have showed an increasing interest in target shooting. ATK also anticipates significant cost savings from the deal.

Bushnell employs 1,100 globally, including about 300 in the Kansas City area. It is expected this year to sell $600 million worth of sporting optics and other goods.
