Hospital System Cuts St. Louis Workforce By 2 Percent

SSM Health Care has eliminated 206 positions in the St. Louis area and a total of 586 positions across its system in a four-state region. The loss represents less than two percent of its employees, and nearly half of the positions were eliminated through attrition. Most of the jobs were administrative positions, a spokesperson said. There are more than 30,000 employees across the SSM system, and more than 12,000 in the St. Louis area.

SSM Health Care, a St. Louis-based nonprofit hospital system that has fallen under increasing financial pressure, made the announcements this week to its employees.

SSM, which operates in Missouri, Illinois, Oklahoma and Wisconsin, has about 8,500 nurses and more than 7,000 employed and affiliated physicians.
