Embezzlement Cases Rise In St. Louis Region

An accountant at Schnucks headquarters in Maryland Heights accused of pocketing more than $110,000 is the latest in a series of embezzlement cases across the St. Louis region, and part of a national trend. A study by the Massachusetts corporate investigations firm Marquet International found 528 major embezzlement cases, defined as thefts totaling more than $100,000, in 2012. That was an 11 percent increase from 2011.

The company’s head of white-collar fraud said he expects the pace to increase in 2013. The Marquet study found that almost two-thirds of perpetrators worked in finance or accounting positions. And while public employees have grabbed the embezzlement spotlight in St. Louis recently, only 11 percent of the cases nationwide came from federal, state or local government positions.
