Kansas City Approves Plaza-Area Hotel Project

The Kansas City Council approved rezoning for a 96-room hotel near the Country Club Plaza, and the hotel’s developer already is considering two other projects in the area.

Construction of the four-story SpringHill Suites Marriott could begin as early as this March. Sanjay Patel of Indianapolis-based MHG Hotels believes the hotel industry nationwide is in a growth phase to meet the pent-up demand caused by the recession of 2008 and slow economic recovery.

Jon Stephens, the interim president of the Kansas City Convention & Visitors Association, said there’s certainly a national and global trend of a rebound in travel, and he believes the number of tourists visiting Kansas City will continue to rise.
