Paula Gianino, who as president and CEO drove the endowment for Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region and Southwest Missouri to top $20 million, plans to retire in January 2015. Gianino started her career as a teacher at Nerinx Hall High School and then later helped start up the hospice program at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. She took the reins as CEO of Planned Parenthood in 1990. Under Gianino’s leadership, Planned Parenthood has cared for more than a million individuals and provided $50 million in discounted and free care, according to the organization. Last year alone, the nonprofit provided nearly $3 million in free and discounted care to patients, Gianino said.
