The St. Louis County Council approved an incentive package worth up to $1.8 billion if Boeing Co. agrees to build its 777X passenger jet at a site on the edge of Lambert St. Louis International Airport. Coupled with the tax breaks approved last week by the state legislature, the council vote upped Missouri’s ante in the Boeing sweepstakes to nearly $3.5 billion. The county’s commitment will be folded into the Missouri economic package submitted to Boeing today.

“This is a business deal, and incentives will have to be offered and they will have to be competitive if we’re going to land these jobs,” St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay told the council prior to the vote during a special session.
