Major Brands Holdings, a St. Louis-based wholesaler of wine, spirits and beer, has acquired another local wholesaler, Garco Wine Co. in a deal set to close early next year. It’s part of Major Brands’ effort to rebuild its $550 million-a-year business after losing several accounts this year, CEO Sue McCollum said.

Garco, led by Michael Cohen, had revenue of about $15 million last year. Cohen will join Major Brands as sales director of new business development.

Major Brands has weathered a tough year amid Missouri’s so-called liquor wars, which began in January when the company behind Absolut Vodka dumped Major Brands and Glazer’s Midwest as distributors, challenging Missouri’s franchise laws, a 1970s regulation that prevents alcohol suppliers from terminating wholesalers without “good cause.”

Major Brands and other wholesalers also have been fighting back against out-of-state wholesalers seeking to overturn Missouri’s residency requirement for wholesalers.
