Gov. Jay Nixon appointed Gail Vasterling as the director of the Department of Health and Senior Services. Vasterling, whose appointment must be confirmed by the Missouri Senate, currently serves as the department’s acting director.
Before becoming acting director, Vasterling was deputy director of the department. Vasterling served as the Governor’s deputy counsel from April 2010 until January 2012, and was a liaison to the DHSS. Prior to that, she was general counsel for the Department of Corrections.
“Gail has continued the strong tradition of this department in protecting the health of Missourians, especially seniors and the very young,” Nixon said in a release. “In the past year alone, Gail has overseen the implementation of measures to detect critical congenital heart disease in newborns and expedite responses to concerns regarding abuse and neglect of older Missourians. Gail has served ably as the acting director, and will an excellent Director of Health for our state.”
