Ford’s Kansas City Assembly Plant in Claycomo has seen an uptick in activity recently as 1,000 additional employees prepare to begin production of the Dearborn, Mich.-based automaker’s new Transit commercial van.

Claycomo is the only U.S. plant producing the Transit, which features several variables that make it the most complex vehicle ever made at the facility.

Production of the Transit is set to start in March, and 175 more employees will be added as that date approaches. A second shift is planned by year’s end, and 800 more employees are expected to be hired for that. At that point, the Claycomo facility should have 5,400 employees, including three shifts building Ford’s F-150 pickup truck.
