Boulevard Brewing Co. is bringing back its extremely popular limited-edition Chocolate Ale. With 9,200 cases and 2,800 barrel kegs, Boulevard has nearly doubled its output since its last release in 2012.
Chocolate Ale is a part of the Smokestack Series release and was first sold in 2011. By 2012 demand easily surpassed supply, causing storeowners to impose a one or two bottle limit per customer. The eccentric taste and high alcohol content has led some stores to charge as much as $17 per bottle.
About a year ago, Boulevard began buying back the beer and offering customers refunds when they discovered that three of their batches didn’t taste quite right. Due to this mishap, the brewery decided to take a year off from brewing Chocolate Ale, but customers didn’t forget about it and now it’s back on the Smokestack Series schedule.
Chocolate Ale will be available in Kansas City bars starting Feb. 3 and in liquor stores on Feb. 4.
