HDA Inc., a St. Louis County-based distributor and publisher, filed notices with the states of Missouri and Ohio that it is closing and will lay off 1,664 employees. HDA had 123 employees at its Hazelwood location.

Layoffs began last month and will continue as the company liquidates its assets. HDA said it had been unable to secure financing to continue its operations.

Laid off employees will not receive severance, but HDA’s president is hopeful someone will purchase the company to try and keep it going.

In 2010, HDA lost a major account in craft retailer Michaels Stores, which previously sourced books from HDA.
