The Public Service Commission gave Laclede Gas permission to raise natural gas rates 9 percent, to 56.5 cents per therm from 51.8 cents per therm, starting Saturday. Laclede told the PSC that it needs the increase to reflect estimated changes in the wholesale price of natural gas for the remainder of the unusually cold winter.

The higher rate means the bill of a typical Laclede gas user will rise $5.61 in March, a company spokeswoman said.

An unexpectedly cold winter has sent natural gas prices soaring. Natural gas futures for near-month delivery hit a 5-year high on Feb. 19, closing at $6.149 per million Btu.
