Pentagon Budget Eliminates Funding For Missouri-Made Jet

The Pentagon’s proposed $495.6 billion budget for the coming fiscal year includes no funding for the Boeing F/A-18, a recommendation that could mean the end of production of the St. Louis-made fighter aircraft in late 2016 and idling thousands of workers. Boeing said it intends to push hard for funding during budget deliberations in Congress, and will be seeking foreign sales of the F/A-18.

The company and St. Louis employees represented by the International Association of Machinists recently renegotiated contract terms with the goal of reducing costs and extending production here. The Pentagon’s budget recommendation reflects a pared-down mission.
