Sprint Owner Says T-Mobile Merger Would Intensify Competition

The new owner of Sprint Corp. said a merger with T-Mobile US would offer scale to compete with top telecom competitors Verizon Wireless and AT&T Inc. and would help improve lagging wireless speeds and create more price competition. SoftBank Corp. CEO Masayoshi Son pledged to start a “massive price war” in the U.S. if regulators let Sprint, based in the Kansas City area, buy T-Mobile US.

During an interview with Charlie Rose, Son re-framed the merger as a way to offer consumers more. A merger between the third- and fourth-ranked carriers also would allow Son to spur further infrastructure upgrades, he said.
