MU To Demolish Apartments Where Walkway Collapsed

The University of Missouri announced that it will close and demolish the University Village apartments, where a walkway collapse on Feb. 22 killed a Columbia firefighter who responded to a structural emergency. Residents will be allowed to break their leases without penalty between now and June 30, when the complex will close.

The structural integrity of the University Village buildings came into question after part of a walkway collapsed. An estimate back in 2008 said a nearly complete demolition and replacement would cost more than $15 million.
