Springfield-based O’Reilly Automotive announced that it will extend coverage under its health insurance plans to same-sex spouses of employees whose marriages are legally recognized under state law.

The change comes after the Washington State Attorney General’s Office filed a petition in court on Monday as part of an investigation into whether O’Reilly was violating the state’s Consumer Protection Act — which prohibits unfair or deceptive business practices — by offering some benefits to opposite-sex couples that were not available to same-sex couples. The attorney general’s office closed its investigation as a result of the change.

O’Reilly’s head of human resources noted that some of the company’s benefit plans — vision, supplemental critical care and accident insurance programs — already provide coverage to same-sex couples. The change will add same-sex spouses to the company’s self-funded health plans.
