Less than six months after the announcement that Belgian brewer Duvel Moortgat was purchasing Kansas City-based Boulevard Brewing Co., the companies say the possibility of overseas expansion by Boulevard is greater than initially anticipated.

Although Boulevard is sold in 25 states and sells two brews in Scandinavia, 35 percent of the company’s sales are within 50 miles of its Kansas City headquarters.

Boulevard founder John McDonald sold the company to Duvel with the intent of producing more beer and hiring more workers. McDonald and Duvel Moortgat USA executives now project that, within two to five years, Boulevard could be sold in every state and overseas.

But Boulevard isn’t in any particular rush to expand. The rollout will be strategic, McDonald said.

“I’ve reinvested in the new company so I am obviously very interested in how things turn out,” said McDonald, who will remain part of senior management and serve on the board of Duvel Moortgat.
