Citizens Sign Petition To Repeal Downtown Columbia Development Vote

A petition to repeal the Columbia City Council’s approval of a downtown student housing project has gathered 3,633 signatures. They still need to be validated, but that’s 400 more signatures than needed to repeal the March 19 vote approving a six-story apartment complex that Opus Development Co. wants to build.

A local attorney and a spokesman for the repeal group said the process leading to the vote didn’t give the public enough time to understand the project and its impact on downtown Columbia’s strained infrastructure. The ordinance being targeted was one of three such development agreements the city considered during a one-week period.
