Defense Department Renews Express Scripts Contract

Express Scripts, the largest public company in the St. Louis area, has been awarded a seven-year contract worth $33.8 million to provide pharmacy benefit services for the Department of Defense.

Express Scripts, the nation’s largest pharmacy benefits manager, has been a DOD contractor since 2003. The new agreement expands Express Scripts’ services, as it will now serve the military worldwide, including Military Treatment Facilities.

Last fall, Congress requested that the department conduct an audit on the effectiveness of Express Scripts’ Tricare mail order pharmacy, which serves the country’s 9.6 million U.S. military beneficiaries. The audit found Express Scripts’ services were more cost effective than traditional retail pharmacies.
