The St. Louis Convention & Visitors Commission is turning to Canada, Mexico and the United Kingdom and looking to leverage the lore of Route 66 in an effort to boost foreign tourism in the area.

About 87,000 travelers from those three countries visited the St. Louis area in 2013, the CVC says. And although foreign visitors are just a small sliver of the area’s total tourism business (21.6 million annual visitors who spent $4.2 billion last year), travelers from outside the United States spent about $4,000 per trip, a CVC official said.

A big part of St. Louis effort centers around getting more foreign tourists to stay in St. Louis while following old Route 66 from Chicago to Los Angeles — a trip that’s already popular with German and British visitor.
