The chairman of the House Armed Services Committee is recommending that the federal budget bill include $450 million to fund five additional EA-18G Growlers.
It is less than the 22 planes and $2.1 billion for the Growler that is included in the Navy’s “unfunded priorities” wish list. But funding at that level — if it gets through Congress — would continue production of the plane into another budget year.
Thousands of local jobs are tied to Growler assembly at Boeing’s north St. Louis County operations. Boeing has enough orders for Growlers and its sister plane, the F/A-18 Super Hornet, to last through 2016, and is awaiting word on possible new orders from other countries.
