Bookstore Opens In St. Louis Suburb Despite Downward Trend

Half Price Books, a new and used bookstore based in Dallas, officially opens in Chesterfield next week despite the competition from Amazon.com that has driven many bookstores out of business, including one in downtown St. Louis recently.

Half Price Books has 120 stores in 16 states, including Kansas City and Independence, and is projected to make $242 million in sales this year. The bookstore was started in Dallas in 1972 by Ken Gjemre and Pat Anderson, and is now run by Anderson’s daughter, Sharon Anderson Wright.
