Mercy Health Trimming Workforce

Mercy Health, based in Chesterfield, has announced plans to reduce its total workforce by 200 to 300 positions across seven states later this month because of market changes, reimbursement reductions and lack of Medicaid expansion in Missouri and other states where it operates. About 40,000 people are employed with Mercy, which has operations in Springfield along with the St. Louis area and has grown to become the nation’s sixth-largest Catholic health system. No specifics have been released about whether Springfield would lose jobs. A Mercy spokeswoman said in a statement that the cuts would affect support functions and not direct patient care.
