The decision by Saint Luke’s Health System to build a rehabilitation hospital in Kansas City with 60 beds is a response to changing reimbursement models spearheaded by the Affordable Care Act, the vice president of regional services said.

Don Sipes said after the announcement Tuesday that reimbursement models are changing such that providers are no longer being paid on a visit-by-visit basis. Instead, they’re receiving bundled payments that cover all of a patient’s care during a given time frame.

One goal is to provide post-acute care that helps keep them from coming back to the hospital, and that back-end is where the rehabilitation hospital comes in.
