Barnes-Jewish Hospital has been recognized as one of the top hospitals in the country by the U.S. News and World Report 2014-2015 Best Hospitals ranking. The St. Louis hospital was one of 17 in the U.S. named to this year’s Honor Roll, claiming the 17th spot on that list.

A total of 4,743 hospitals were considered for the ranking, and only 144 of those received national recognition in any specialty area. Barnes-Jewish received national recognition in 13 out of 16 adult specialty areas. The hospital’s highest-ranked specialty was pulmonology, which ranked ninth nationally.

This marks the 22nd year on the Honor Roll for Barnes-Jewish.

Our status is a direct reflection of the dedication to high quality and compassionate patient care displayed every day by our Washington University physicians, our nurses and each member of the Barnes-Jewish team,” Barnes-Jewish president Rick Liekweg said in a press release.

The University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kan., was the top-ranked hospital in the Kansas City metro area. Twelve of its specialities were nationally ranked.

St. Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City, Mo., was ranked No. 2 in Missouri, behind Barnes-Jewish. St. Luke’s received national recognition for three specialties: cardiology and heart surgery, gynecology and urology.

Missouri Baptist Medical Center in St. Louis ranked third in the state. Boone County Hospital and the University of Missouri Health Care System, both in Columbia, were tied for fourth.

“It certainly is great for Missourians to know the care is accessible close to home, rather than in Minnesota, Boston or New York,” said Dave Dillon, vice president of media relations for the Missouri Hospital Association.

However, Dillon said while the rankings highlight the hospitals, they should be only one of many metrics used when patients choose where to receive health care.
