Congressional committee backs funding for St. Louis-made jet

A U.S. Senate Appropriations subcommittee on defense approved the production of 12 additional E18 Growlers in the 2015 Pentagon budget. They are built by Boeing workers in St. Louis, and are considered crucial planes for electronic warfare — including jamming enemy capabilities — in the Navy’s airplane arsenal.

But budgetary pressure left them off the Navy’s future funding request. The funding, $1.3 billion, would extend the production line at the Boeing plant by a year. In May, the House Appropriations Committee also included a dozen Growlers in its 2015 defense spending blueprint.
