Independence council to vote on huge mixed-use development

After a public hearing, the Independence City Council intends to vote tonight on rezoning for the first phase of a 3,000-acre development using principles of New Urbanism, which promotes compact, walkable, mixed-use projects.

The Community of Christ, which owns the 5 square miles to be developed during the next 25 years, chose Homes by Whittaker of St. Charles to develop its first project, with nearly 900 homes and apartments, along with neighborhood commercial and an elementary school.

The entire project proposal includes about 16,000 homes and more than 4 million square feet of retail uses.
