Michael Sam hasn’t yet assured his spot on the St. Louis Rams roster, but his jersey was among the highest selling on NFLShop.com during the first quarter of the league’s fiscal year.
Sam’s jersey was the No. 6 seller overall and No. 2 among all rookies on the NFL’s official retail website, according to ESPN.
Sam, a former University of Missouri defensive end selected with the 249th overall pick in April’s NFL Draft, is the first openly gay player in league history. He beat out NFL superstar quarterbacks such as the New England Patriots’ Tom Brady (No. 7), the New Orleans Saints’ Drew Brees (No. 8) and the Green Bay Packers’ Aaron Rodgers (No. 9) in first-quarter jersey sales.
Johnny Manziel, the quarterback drafted this year by the Cleveland Browns, had the best-selling jersey in the first quarter.
