State regulators oppose Noranda’s proposed rate cut, offer compromise

All five members of the Missouri Public Service Commission said they oppose Noranda Aluminum’s request for a lower electric rate from Ameren Missouri, but the Missouri Office of Public Counsel pitched a compromise that would give Noranda about half of what it wanted from the regulators. The PSC has yet to adopt a final order, but the commissioners said the southeast Missouri smelter’s issues would be better addressed in the Legislature.

Noranda has warned that its plant — the only primary aluminum smelter in the state and one of about 10 in the U.S. — risked closure if it didn’t get the lower rate.
