Ameren profits surge 57 percent

Ameren Corp. reported a net income of $149 million in the second quarter, up 57 percent compared to $95 million in net income reported the same time last year. Revenue also grew 1 percent, to $1.42 billion, beating out Bloomberg analysts’ predictions of $1.4 billion for the quarter.

The St. Louis-based utility holding company said that warmer early summer temperatures and high costs for refueling its Callaway County nuclear plant last year explain why sales this year were stronger.

The company’s generation and distribution facilities in Missouri outperformed its distribution facilities in Illinois; over the past year, profits in Missouri when up by 50 percent while Illinois profits fell by 9.7 percent.
