Some Ferguson businesses put protection in their own hands

Many merchants along West Florissant Avenue in Ferguson said Monday that customers continued to stay away because of ongoing turmoil in the St. Louis suburb. But some area merchants are taking matters into their own hands to try to ensure the continuation of business as usual amid protests and violence stemming from the Aug. 9 police shooting of unarmed 18-year-old Michael Brown.

Hollywood Beauty, a family-run store situated on the north end of West Florrisant, has not been hit by looters. And the operators of the family-owned business aren’t taking any chances.

Each night, when the store closes, men from the family that owns Hollywood block the two parking lot entrances with their cars. Some of the dozen cousins and brothers carry handguns in their waistbands. They all take turns keeping watch over the store.
