Free fiber-optic Internet is coming to North Kansas City.

The City Council of North Kansas City has unanimously approved a lease agreement with DataShack LC to maintain and operate the city’s fiber-optic network, LiNKCity, for 10 years.

DataShack, based in North Kansas City, will provide free Internet service to the city, public library, city churches and all public schools. Also, DataShack will provide all existing LiNKCity customers with free gigabit-speed Internet until the end of the year.

The city will maintain ownership of LiNKCity. DataShack and the city will share profits and losses equally, though the city’s potential losses are capped at $150,000, including capital investment.
