Medical device startup Sparo Labs raises $1.25 million

Sparo Labs, a St. Louis-based medical startup grown out of Washington University, has received $1.25 million in funding from 14 angel investors in St. Louis, New York and Michigan. Co-founder Abigail Cohen said the funding will be put toward hiring employees to help prepare the company’s pocket-sized spirometer for U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval.

The spirometer is a device used to measure lung function and has potential use in the treatment of asthma patients.

Cohen and her co-founder, Andrew Brimer, started the company in a class at Wash U.
