Hundreds of shoppers flocked to suburban Kansas City for the opening of the first Ikea store in Kansas. The Swedish retailer’s 40th store, spread over 359,000 square feet, is on the southeast corner of Interstate 35 and Johnson Drive. Its first Missouri store is scheduled to open in St. Louis in fall 2015.

In traditional fashion, a Swedish log-sawing ceremony was held at the store entrance instead of an official ribbon-cutting. The ceremony is said to bring good luck to new homes and all future visitors. Ikea is known for its easy-to-assemble furniture along with its Swedish meatballs and its massive bright blue and yellow buildings (after the colors of the Swedish flag).
