A group led by a former executive of Delta Queen Steamboat Co. is trying to raise the $10 million necessary to refurbish the historic boat and get it cruising along the Mississippi River again.
If the boat can be financed, Cornel Martin hopes St.Louis will serve as its homeport and headquarters.
However, a federal law preventing wooden ships from carrying overnight passengers stands in the way of the boat’s launch. The House passed an exemption for the Queen and the Senate is considering the legislation.
Until recently, the 1920s-era paddlewheeler was serving as a floating hotel in Chattanooga, Tenn. But that ended in January after severe winter weather damaged it and knocked it out of commission.
