St. Louis housing market stagnated this summer

The spring and summer selling season in the St. Louis metro area ended up as an extension of the story agents have been telling since last fall: Sales are down. Prices are generally up a little, although that trend varies widely by the neighborhood. The number of homes for sale is down sharply.

Last month, for instance, there were 6,900 homes for sale in St. Louis and St. Louis County, down 26 percent from a year earlier. Agents blame that shortage, plus stingy mortgage lenders, for the decline in sales during their peak sales season.
