EPA fines Kansas City research lab

Harcros Chemicals Inc. in Kansas City, Kan., was ordered to pay a $1.5 million fine after pleading guilty to one count of storing hazardous waste without a permit. The special agent in charge of the EPA’s criminal enforcement program in Kansas said the illegal storage practices that took place from May 2006 through January 2009 “threatened groundwater supplies and put employees and the public at serious risk.”

Harcros operates a research and development lab where chemists test new products and conduct quality-control checks.
