New guidelines recommend IUDs or hormone implants for teen girls

The American Academy of Pediatrics has issued new guidelines recommending intrauterine devices, or IUDs, and hormonal implants as a top form of contraception for teenagers. The new guideline echoes the 2012 recommendation from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Among women ages 15 to 19, birth control pills and condoms are the most popular forms of contraception, but only 4.5 percent of women have ever used long-acting reversible contraceptives.

At the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kan., hormonal implants are now a more popular option than birth control pills amongst teens.
